Invitation designs for any Wedding Budget ~

Your Wedding invitation Design is a small part of your budget but a big part of your wedding. Your invitation design will set the tone of your wedding and will remain as a keepsake long after your celebration ends. Your wedding invitation and other printed communication pieces are generally about 5% of your overall wedding budget. When calculating your invitation design budget, factor in all the pieces you want to include, such as Save the Dates, Respond Cards, and Thank You Notes.

As you start shopping you might wonder, why do wedding invitation prices vary so much? While there are many different wedding invitation styles, really four main things determine the price of your wedding invitation design:

  • type of printing
  • type of paper
  • embellishments
  • and designer

But rest assured, no matter what your budget is you can find the perfect invitation.

Printing Your Invitation Design

Below are the most common invitation printing methods, arranged in order from least to most expensive

  • Digital flat printing- prints your ink flat onto the paper for a smooth finish.
  • Thermographic printing- prints your ink slightly raised, giving some dimension to your wedding invitation design.
  • Letterpress printing- makes an indented impression when printing and gives an old-world classic look.
  • Engraved printing- gives the most dimension to your invitation design and prints the best color of any printing method. Engraving is also one of the most expensive types of printing because of the complex manufacturing process required. Engraving is also know for being able to hold print a delicate fine line that really sets of certain fonts and invitation designs.

Invitation Paper

There are an unlimited number of paper types. The two primary factors to be taken into consideration in your invitation design are:

  • Thickness- the rule of thumb to use: the thicker the paper, the more expensive. Thickness makes for a more substantial invitation.
  • Materials- invitations are usually made from either wood pulp or cotton. Generally, cotton is more expensive because of its soft feel. Unlike wood pulp, cotton invitations will not decompose over time and will last as mementos forever.

Invitation Ribbons and Appliques

Below are the most common invitation printing methods, arranged in order from least to most expensive

  • Invitation Ribbon- bring style, texture, and elegance
  • Layers- give thickness and add multiple colors or even shimmer
  • Invitation Pockets- hold all the parts of your ensemble together in one beautiful, neat package
  • Invitation Appliqués- can be anything from crystals to sentimental seashells and can be used to tie your invitation design into your wedding theme.

Designer Invitations

Just as with any other product category, choosing a designer invitation tends to cost a little more. But you get the assurance of the invitation designer brand name, and often a great designer really does have a special look.
